Privacy Policy

Last updated Applies to the Turemi Android app and this website

On this page

This Privacy Policy explains how the Turemi Android app (called 译见 in Chinese) and the Turemi website at turemi.transfers.club handle information. In this policy, “Turemi”, “we”, “us” and “our” mean the operators of Turemi. “You” means anyone who uses the app or visits the website.

Please read this policy together with our Terms of Use. If you have a question, email us at zs19971226@gmail.com.

At a glance#

  • Turemi translates text, photos, screens, conversations and audio playing on your phone. Each feature can use our online service or offline packs that run on your phone.
  • When a feature uses the online service, the content needed for that translation is sent to our server and to the speech-recognition and translation providers it uses. For photo and screen translation, only the text recognized on your phone is sent, not the picture or screenshot.
  • Your translation history, favorites, saved recordings and saved photos are stored on your phone. Turemi has no user accounts and does not sync your history to the cloud.
  • The app shows ads through Google AdMob and measures app use with Google Analytics for Firebase. These services receive device and usage information, but we do not send them your translation content.
  • Where the law requires your consent for personalized advertising or for analytics, we ask before that processing starts. Advertising and analytics are separate choices, and neither is a condition of accepting our Terms of Use.

1. Information you provide for translation#

What leaves your phone depends on the feature and on whether it is set to online or offline. You can choose online or offline for each feature under Settings › Online & offline. When an online engine is available, features use it by default.

Feature When set to online, we receive What stays on your phone
Text translation The text you enter or paste, and the languages you choose. Your history and favorites.
Photo translation The blocks of text recognized in the photo, and the languages you choose. The photo itself. Text recognition runs on your phone.
Screen translation The blocks of text recognized on the screen, and the languages you choose. The screenshots. They are processed in memory on your phone and are not saved as images.
Conversation translation Audio segments of the speech you capture, together with the chosen languages and timing details such as the position of each segment in the session. Depending on the capture mode, audio is sent sentence by sentence while you talk, or after you finish a press-and-hold or tap-to-stop recording, when a long recording may be sent as several segments in turn. Your history and any recordings you choose to save.
Live captions The audio you choose to caption, which can include sound from other apps, streamed while it plays, together with the chosen languages. Your caption history and any recordings you choose to save.

Our server returns the recognized text and translations to the app. To do this, it passes the content to the speech-recognition and translation model providers it is configured to use. Those providers process the content to produce the result for you.

When a feature is set to offline and its offline pack is installed, recognition and translation run on your phone, and the content of that translation is not sent to our server. The app still uses the internet for other things, such as downloading offline packs, checking for updates when you ask, showing ads, and analytics. Some features can switch to offline automatically when the online service is unavailable; you can turn this off in Settings.

Content you translate may include personal information about you or other people, such as names in a message or voices in a recording. Please translate only content you have the right to use, and avoid sending sensitive information through the online service if you do not want it processed by us and our providers.

2. Information used to run the online service#

Turemi does not have accounts. The first time a feature uses the online service, and when you check for updates, the app registers this installation with our server. Registration and later requests include:

  • A random installation ID created by the app, and a token issued by our server. These are not hardware identifiers.
  • Your device’s manufacturer and model name, Android version, and the app’s version, package name and distribution channel.
  • Request details, such as a request ID used to avoid duplicate processing, the feature used, timestamps, and whether the request succeeded.
  • Your IP address, which is visible to our server and its network providers whenever the app connects.

We use this information to deliver the features you request, apply usage limits, prevent abuse and keep the service secure, diagnose problems, and answer update checks. Our server can suspend online access for an installation that abuses the service.

The installation ID and token are stored in the app’s private storage and are not backed up. If you clear the app’s data or reinstall it, the app starts as a new installation.

3. Advertising with Google AdMob#

The app shows ads provided through Google AdMob (the Google Mobile Ads SDK). When ads are requested and shown, Google and, where applicable, its advertising partners may collect:

  • Your IP address, which can be used to estimate your general location.
  • Device and app identifiers, such as the Android advertising ID (where available and permitted), the app set ID, and other identifiers used for advertising and fraud prevention.
  • Ad and app interactions, such as ad requests, impressions, clicks and app launches.
  • Diagnostic and performance information about the ads SDK, and device information such as model, operating system, language and network type.

This information is used to deliver ads, measure ad performance, limit how often ads appear, and detect fraud and abuse. Depending on your choices, your region and our settings, ads may be personalized based on your activity, non-personalized (based on general context such as approximate location), or limited.

We do not send your translation text, recognized text, audio, photos, screenshots or clipboard content to AdMob or to advertisers. If you tap an ad, you leave our control: the advertiser’s site or app has its own privacy practices.

Google’s handling of this information is described in Google’s Privacy Policy and in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services.

4. App analytics with Google Analytics for Firebase#

We use Google Analytics for Firebase to understand how the app is used so we can fix problems and improve it. It collects:

  • Events about app use, such as first open, app updates, sessions, screens viewed, features started, whether a feature used the online or offline engine, and whether actions succeeded or failed, with approximate durations.
  • An app-instance ID created by Firebase for this installation.
  • App and device information, such as app version, device model, operating system version, language and screen settings.
  • Approximate location (such as country or city) derived from your IP address.
  • The Android advertising ID, only where it is enabled on your device and its use is permitted by your choices and applicable law.

Analytics data does not include your translation input or output, recognized text, audio, photos, screenshots, clipboard content or the contents of support emails. Analytics data is linked to an installation identifier and is not anonymous.

Google Analytics is a separate Google service with its own terms. Google processes this data under the applicable Google Analytics terms and data-processing terms, and under Google’s Privacy Policy. See Privacy and Security in Firebase for more information.

5. Your advertising and analytics choices#

  • Consent where required. Where the law requires consent, for example for personalized ads or certain analytics in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, we ask for it before the relevant data is collected. If you do not agree, you can still use the app; ads may be non-personalized or limited, and analytics that needs consent stays off.
  • Separate choices. Your advertising choice and your analytics choice are separate. Accepting our Terms of Use does not mean you consent to personalized ads or analytics.
  • Changing your mind. We provide a way in the app to review and change your advertising and analytics choices at any time. A change applies from then on.
  • Opting out of targeted advertising. Where personalized advertising counts as “selling” or “sharing” personal information, or as targeted advertising, under the law where you live, you can opt out through the app’s privacy choices. We do not sell personal information for money.
  • Android advertising ID. You can reset or delete your advertising ID, or opt out of ads personalization, in your device settings (usually under Settings › Google › Ads or Settings › Privacy › Ads, depending on your device). When the advertising ID is deleted, apps receive a string of zeros instead.

6. Permissions the app asks for#

Turemi asks for permissions only when you use a feature that needs them. You can revoke them in Android settings; the related feature will then stop working until you grant them again.

Permission Why it is used
Camera To take a photo for photo translation.
Microphone To hear speech for conversation translation and microphone captions.
Screen capture (asked by Android each session) To read text on your screen for screen translation, or to capture audio from other apps for live captions. Android shows an indicator while capture is active.
Display over other apps To show the floating button, caption window and translations on top of other apps.
Notifications To show the required notification while screen translation or captions run, and download progress for offline packs.
Internet and network state For the online service, offline pack downloads, update checks, ads and analytics.

Choosing an existing photo uses Android’s photo picker, so the app only receives the photo you pick. The app reads your clipboard only when you tap paste, and writes to it only when you tap copy.

7. Information stored on your phone#

Translation history, favorites, recordings you choose to save, saved photo translations, settings and offline packs are stored in the app’s private storage on your phone. Turemi does not offer cloud backup or sync of these saved records, and they are not included in Android backups. Content sent for online translation is handled as described in section 1; saving or deleting a record on your phone does not change that processing.

You can delete history, favorites, recordings and offline packs in the app (for example under Settings › Storage), or remove everything by clearing the app’s data or uninstalling it.

If you copy, share, export or save something outside the app, such as saving a translated photo to your Pictures folder or sharing text to another app, that copy is controlled by you and by the app or service that receives it. Deleting Turemi’s data does not delete those copies.

8. Downloads, updates and other Google services#

  • Offline packs. When you download an offline pack, the app connects to the host that serves it, such as our download server, Hugging Face, or Google for ML Kit language packs. Those hosts receive your IP address and standard request information.
  • Google ML Kit. Some features use Google ML Kit on your phone for on-device translation and language identification. ML Kit processes the text itself on your phone and does not send that text or its results to Google. It may contact Google to receive models, fixes and compatibility information, and it sends Google metrics about how ML Kit performs and is used: device information (such as manufacturer, model and Android version), the app’s package name and version, per-installation identifiers, performance metrics, API configuration, input and output sizes, events and error codes, the configured translation languages and identified languages. ML Kit translation also uses Firebase installations and Firebase Remote Config for configuration and diagnostics. Google uses this information to measure performance, debug, maintain and improve ML Kit, and detect misuse, under Google’s Privacy Policy and the ML Kit terms.
  • Update checks. When you tap to check for updates, the app asks our server whether a newer version exists, using the installation information described in section 2. If an update is available, it opens Google Play or the download page.
  • Ratings. The app may ask you to rate it using Google Play’s in-app review feature. Your rating and review go to Google Play, not to us.

9. Support emails#

If you email us, we receive your email address, your message, and anything you attach or paste, such as the optional support summary the app lets you copy. The support summary contains only the app version, Android version, online or offline choices, the number of installed packs and how many permissions are granted. Our email is hosted by Google (Gmail). We use emails only to answer you, and we keep them as long as needed to handle your request and any follow-up.

10. The Turemi website#

The website at turemi.transfers.club is a set of static pages served over HTTPS through Cloudflare. The pages contain no JavaScript, analytics or advertising code, forms, accounts, web fonts, third-party images or uploads, and the website does not use Google Analytics, Firebase or AdMob. The app’s ads and analytics described above apply only to the app. Like any website, our hosting and security providers process your IP address, browser details and request information to deliver pages and protect the site. Cloudflare may set strictly necessary security cookies when it checks for abusive traffic. See Cloudflare’s Privacy Policy.

11. Who receives information#

  • Our server and its infrastructure providers, which host and run the online service.
  • Speech-recognition and translation model providers used by our server, which process online content to produce results.
  • Google, for AdMob ads, Google Analytics, ML Kit, Google Play and Gmail, as described above, and advertising partners that take part in AdMob ad serving where applicable.
  • Download hosts for offline packs, and Cloudflare for the website.
  • Authorities or other parties, when required by law, or when reasonably necessary to protect the rights, safety or security of users, the public or Turemi.

If Turemi is transferred to another operator, information we hold may be transferred to them, and this policy will continue to apply to it unless you are told otherwise.

12. Why we use information#

We use information to provide the features you ask for, keep the online service secure and within its limits, fix problems and improve the app, show and measure ads, answer you, and meet legal obligations.

Where data protection laws such as the GDPR apply, we rely on these legal bases: performing our agreement with you when we provide the features you request; our legitimate interests in security, abuse prevention and keeping the service working; your consent where it is required, such as for personalized ads or certain analytics; and legal obligations.

13. How long information is kept#

  • Information on your phone stays until you delete it, clear the app’s data or uninstall the app.
  • Our server keeps installation and request records only as long as reasonably needed for the purposes in section 2, including security, abuse prevention and legal obligations. Model providers handle content under their own terms.
  • Google keeps advertising and analytics data according to its policies and the retention settings we choose in Google Analytics.

14. International processing#

We, our server, our providers and Google may process information in countries other than the one you live in, where data protection laws may differ. Where the law requires it, we rely on appropriate safeguards for these transfers.

15. Security#

Release versions of the app connect to our online service over HTTPS. Model keys are kept on our server, not in the app. We limit what the app sends, and we keep history on your phone. No system is completely secure, though, and we cannot guarantee the security of information sent over the internet or stored on any device. Keep your phone protected with a screen lock.

16. Your rights#

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to the processing of your personal information, to receive a copy of it, to withdraw consent, and to complain to your local data protection authority.

To make a request, email zs19971226@gmail.com. Because Turemi has no accounts, we may need information that identifies your installation before we can find related records, and we may be unable to link some records to you. We will tell you what we can do. For data held on your phone, you can use the deletion options in section 7. For advertising and analytics, you can also use the choices in section 5.

17. Children#

Turemi is a general-purpose translation app. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children in a way that requires a parent’s consent under applicable law. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, for example by email, contact us and we will delete it.

18. Changes to this policy#

We may update this policy as the app or the law changes. We will post the new version on this page with a new date, and for significant changes we will also give notice in the app or on the website. Where the law requires your consent to a change, we will ask for it.

19. Contact#
